Description

The Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida, in partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, is accepting applications from high school students for unpaid internships for academic year 2024-2025. The students will intern with a circuit court or county court judge. Internship hours are during regular court business hours of 8:00 am – 5:00 pm., excluding court holidays, school holidays and teacher work days, and subject to the individual judge's discretion.  Students will not be required to work outside of regular court hours.

Students will be assessed and evaluated by the assigned judge throughout their internship on the following criteria:

  • Attendance/Punctuality
  • Communication Skills/Interest Level
  • Reliability/Motivation
  • Acquired/Learned Skills for Internship

It will be the responsibility of parent’s or student’s responsible party to arrange the students’ transport to and from the courthouse facility.  Students must dress in proper business attire, and conduct themselves in a professional manner.

 

Responsibilities

  • Performs various clerical and/or administrative duties for the assigned division.
  • Relays messages for the judge’s office, and assists with administrative duties and special projects.
  • Makes frequent contact with judges, personnel from the Administrative Office of the Courts, Clerk of the Courts, State Attorney’s Office, Public Defenders Office, private attorneys, law clerks, state and local law enforcement, bailiffs, social service professionals and the public.

    REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally. Knowledge of and ability to use correct English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to keep all information confidential.
  • Ability to observe high standards of conduct.
  • Ability to perform work under the direct supervision of a judge or judge’s staff.
  • Ability to perform related work as required.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.

Qualifications

  • Must be a high school junior or senior in academic year 2021-2022
  • Must attend a Miami-Dade County Public Schools high school
  • Must have a 2.5 unweighted GPA or higher at time of application
  • Must have excellent school attendance
  • Must have student accident insurance
  • Must obtain permission of school site internship coordinator to participate in the program
  • Application, transcript, essay, teacher recommendation, and resume (which includes a list of extracurricular activities)
  • Signed parental consent form/waiver

Physical Demands

Must be able to lift up to 10 pounds or more. Position may require significant amount of standing, lifting, siting down and walking.

Communication

Must speak English.  Some positions may require a second language.
