Description

This position is responsible for advising and assisting Judges with respect to substantive and procedural legal issues related to the division's cases. Specifically, felony mental health cases. The individual in this position will be the liaison between the Judiciary, other courts, and entities including the Clerk of Courts, community based service groups, the parties, and their attorneys, in order to provide court agency partners and litigants with maximum access to the court and its service.


The Case Manager position responsibilities and duties include: providing case information to court personnel, case coordination and referrals 
to community-based services, managing and preparing cases for court hearings briefing judges, attending hearings, maintaining record/filing system, scheduling hearings, speak in a courtroom setting, and performing related clerical functions.This position works under the general supervision of a Program Coordinator developing work methods and sequences.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, work will be performed partially on-site and remotely.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct consultation to the judges on any cases involving defendants who are mentally ill or with intellectual disabilities.
  •  Coordinates residential, psychiatric, and substance abuse treatment for criminal defendants.
  •  Drafts conditional release plans, orders to transport ,and other orders requiring a judge’s signature.
  •  Maintains a caseload of defendants under court supervision and monitors for compliance with all conditions of release.
  •  Attends all relevant court sessions and/or hearings and enters notes into the database.
  •  Screens and calendars cases; notify all parties of dates and times.
  •  Serves as liaison between the court, attorneys, the Department of Children and Families, South Florida Behavioral Health Network, State Forensic Facilities, and community treatment providers.
  •  Assists the court with scheduling of outpatient appointments for evaluations.
  •  Delivers transport orders to the Department of Corrections Transportation Unit.
  •  Uploads pertinent documentation into the MHAO database and maintain active case notes.
  •  Performs related work as required.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Psychology, Social Work, Criminal Justice or a related field.
  •  Two (2) years of related work experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs):

  •  Knowledge of the criminal justice system.
  •  Knowledge of the function and jurisdiction of the court.
  •  Knowledge of community/private mental health and substance abuse treatment providers.
  •  Knowledge of residential facilities available for forensic clients.
  •  Knowledge of computer software (Outlook and Microsoft Office) and equipment (scanner and copier).
  •  Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  •  Ability to make work decisions in accordance with laws, regulations and departmental policies and procedures.
  •  Ability to maintain accurate case documentation and prepare written information.
  •  Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
  •  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the judiciary, co-workers, attorneys, court service partners, and the general public.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred.

Physical Demands

Work involves a significant amount of standing, sitting, talking, listening, balancing, stooping, and reaching with hands and arms; must be able to transfer up to 10 pounds.
